You’ve booked an outdoor family photoshoot in Hertfordshire and need something to wear? Planning outfits for your session can feel like the hardest part but it doesn’t have to be.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s to feel comfortable, connected, and like yourselves. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in every image.

✨ Start with the Feeling, Not the Outfit

Before choosing clothes, think about how you want your photos to feel.

Soft and cosy?
Light and playful?
Calm and connected?

Outdoor sessions work best when everything feels natural and effortless like a beautiful version of your everyday life.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Coordinating as a Family (Without Matching)

Instead of matching exactly, aim to coordinate.

A good approach:

  • Choose 2–3 colours and build outfits around them

  • Mix textures (knit, linen, denim)

  • Let one outfit be the “anchor” (often mum’s), then build the rest around it

This keeps everything feeling cohesive but still natural and relaxed.

👗 Outfit Ideas (Easy Wins)

  • A flowy dress for mum + neutral layers for everyone else

  • Chunky knits + jeans in soft tones

  • Linen shirts, cardigans, and simple basics

  • Barefoot for little ones (if the setting allows!)

Avoid:

  • Large logos

  • Bright/neon colours

  • Busy patterns that distract from faces

  • If your session is surrounded by greenery I suggest avoiding wearing too much green as you may blend in with the surroundings

If opting to wear a bright colour like red, ensure to balance the look out by keeping most of the items a cream or white colour and allow the red to be an accent colour. Everyone wearing matching red tops would be too much 🍓

🌿 A More Sustainable (and Budget Friendly) Way

You absolutely don’t need to buy something new just for your session.

Some of the best pieces come from:

  • Vinted

  • Depop

  • Your own wardrobe (or borrowing from friends/family)

Second-hand shopping is not only more affordable, but also a more thoughtful, sustainable choice and often you’ll find beautiful, unique pieces that feel less “high street.”

If you’re searching, try terms like:

  • “linen dress”

  • “boho dress”

  • “oversized cardigan”

My favourite brands to search for are:

  • Zara

  • Free people

  • Next

  • Boden

  • Daughters of India

🧡 Most Important: Be Comfortable

If you’re adjusting straps, pulling at sleeves, or worrying about how something fits it will show.

Comfort = confidence.
And confidence is what makes your photos feel real.
