Which session time is best for your outdoor family session… with Jenna Marshall Photography, Hertfordshire

As a family photographer (based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire), July, August and September are my busiest months for outdoor family photography sessions. I offer these sessions at different times throughout the day. This post will give you an insight in to what difference the time of your session will make to the overall aesthetic of your images. Obviously the weather will also play a part, be it cloudy or sunny. Here are examples to help you choose which time is best for you and your family.

Sunny Day – Morning light (sessions around 9am)

Morning light can create an interesting portrait with a lot of contrast between light and shadow. My favourite locations to use are often in direct sunlight in the morning not leaving much diffused light. I love the brightness of sessions at this time. These sessions are often a favourite with parents as children have recently eaten and are fresh from a good night sleep ready for the day.

Cloudy Day- Morning light (sessions around 9am)

Do not be put off by a cloudy day. Morning sessions on a cloudy day can give beautiful evenly diffused light.

Sunny Day- Early Evening Light (sessions around 5pm)

The sun has usually moved around create a nice shaded area in my favourite location during the evening sessions. These sessions can often be a little bit awkward for children as it is usually around their dinner time but I highly recommend changing up the routine for that day to make the most of this beautiful lighting.

Golden Hour Lighting on a Sunny Day (one hour before sunsets)

This is probably my favourite kind of lighting for sessions. The low sun creates such a beautiful warm feel to portraits. The sessions can be hard for children to not be tired, especially in the summer when the sun sets so late. These two portraits were taken at 7.30pm in June. I ensured both the kids had their dinner before we went out for a walk. Being outside immediately woke them up and they enjoyed playing around between photos. They felt like it was a treat being allowed out so late too.
