It is well known that I am an open person. I openly talk about issues I have faced in the hope that others do not feel alone and gain some comfort from knowing someone else is going through the same rubbish too. Social media has a way of making you feel like everyone else has the perfect life when it is far from the truth. This past year has been a difficult one for me. I have had a range of challenges to face. I had an ectopic pregnancy which lead me to feel very low and anxious for quite some time, other ongoing health issues that I am currently awaiting surgery for, struggles within my marriage, all while dealing with the stress of running my own business and trying to make it a success, my life has been far from perfect.
A friend of mine recommended a book to me called ‘Light is the New Black’. Since reading it back in October my whole outlook on everything has changed. A new perspective on how to deal with life issues has made such an impact on how I look at everything.
I decided to write a list of everything I wanted to achieve over the next 5 years and wrote down the steps I needed to take to hit these targets. Here were a few of my business targets;
Win a few more awards from the Guild of Professional Photographers
Be Featured on a Photography Blog
Get an image published in a photography magazine so I can add ‘published photographer’ to my description.
So I started taking steps to hit these targets. I entered some images into the guild of professional photographers monthly competition. I started posting my work in photography blog groups and I submitted some portraits to a photography magazine. My hard work paid off on every single one!
In the past month I won two Bronze awards from the Guild of Professional Photographers 🙂
I also got featured on a Photography Blog and another Instagram page…
Then a couple of days ago I hit my biggest target when I received an email from Dear Photographer Magazine to inform me that a self portrait I took of me an my daughter is going to be published in their next issue! To say I am proud is a massive understatement!
No matter what you are going through I highly recommend writing a list of things you want to achieve or a list on how you are going to improve the stresses you may be going through. They do not have to be work related. I have a mix of personal targets such as spending at least 20 minutes a day sitting and reading just for myself, making an effort to sit and cuddle up with my husband of an evening, amongst other more aspiring things that I will save for another blog. Not only does it give you something to focus on giving you a break from the day to day rubbish but it also gives you something to aim for. Also use your bad experiences! Everyone has them. Don’t be afraid to show your scars, quirks and vulnerabilities. We are all human and we all have them and find we connect better with others that show theirs unashamedly. Be proud and work for those dreams, you know the ones you say ‘Oh one day I’d love to…”. Don’t use excuses anymore, start working for them today! Comment below with your dreams and targets 🙂
